We are very excited to announce that we now offer in warranty and out of warranty iPad repair. As an Apple Authorized Service Provider we are able to offer direct access to iPad repair through Apple.

Not only does this mean we can handle your warranty related issue but also any AppleCare+ or out of warranty problem.

Just as our Mac repair services are very straightforward, so is the iPad. See the iPad Repair Service page for full details or let us know if you have any questions.

NOTE: We can only repair iPads. This does not include iPhones or iPods. You must call Apple for service on those devices.

So you may be asking yourself why write a blog post informing our customers we have switched credit card merchants?

Because it matters, here is why…

If you are not familiar with Square it is a payment platform that works via iPads, iPhones and Android based devices. Square does not just offer us better overall service, rates and reliability but it offers our customers a better experience.

Square is mobile
With Square we are able to finish a transaction anywhere. That means on-site, in-store, at the Care Counter, etc. This allows us to offer better customer service overall. Our job is to spend more time helping you not waiting to process a payment.

Square is innovative: Square Wallet
Being a tech company, this matters. Square allows customers to install Square Wallet on their mobile device. With Square Wallet, you setup an account and input your credit card info. Square Wallet then allows you to pay just by being in a location. You don’t have to pull out your credit card. Just walk in, say your name and your account is charged.

Square is great for small businesses and if you own a small business and are interested in Square, feel free to ask us questions. We would love to help you get it setup.

As we always mention, we are constantly finding ways to make our customer experience better – this is yet another way.

Apple has determined that certain Seagate 1TB hard drives used in 21.5-inch and 27-inch iMac systems may fail. These systems were sold between October 2009 and July 2011.

Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) will replace affected hard drives free of charge.

Apple is contacting affected iMac owners who provided a valid email address during the product registration process to let them know about this program. If you have not been contacted, but think you have a 1TB Seagate hard drive, you can enter your serial number here to see if it’s part of this program.

It is recommended to have this hard drive replaced as soon as possible.

Replacement Process

We can handle this repair for you. You can bring in your iMac Monday – Friday 9-6 to be evaluated and hard drive replaced.

What do I need to bring?
We suggest bringing the iMac, Power Cable and original box for easy and safe transport. We do not need your keyboard or mouse.

How long will the repair take?
Most repairs take 2-4 business days to complete. If you need it quicker please contact us for details.

Data Backup

Before bringing in your iMac please backup your data. Apple has a list of options for backup here.

Not sure how to do that? We can backup the data for you, for a $50 fee.

Additional Info

If you believe you have paid for a repair or replacement due to this issue, contact Apple regarding a refund.

This worldwide Apple program does not extend the standard warranty coverage of the iMac.

The program covers affected iMacs for three years after the first retail sale of the unit or until April 12, 2013, whichever provides longer coverage for you.

If you have any further questions or concerns please contact us at 252-558-1280 or help@universitypccare.com

If you have called or been into our store over the past week you probably heard or saw quite a bit of construction. Over the past week we have completely revamped our repair benches to meet the recent demand.

Over the past 2 months we have had an increase in the amount of computers being brought in for repair. While this is a great problem to have we were literally running out of space to work on computers at the speed and efficiency you have come to expect from us. Because we never just surrender to a problem we were determined to fix it and make it better, and so we did.

We built two custom benches to house laptops for both diagnostic and repair. These custom benches increase the number we can diagnose/repair at once by two fold. In the process we were able to shift desktop diagnostics and repair to a larger area with monitors mounted out of the way to increase space as well.

We are extremely excited about this and wanted to share what we are doing to constantly improve our process.

Thanks for your continued support!

Today, we are happy to announce Care Bucks. Care Bucks can be used just like cash on future repairs. Care Bucks are our way of saying thank you for choosing us.

How do I get Care Bucks?
It’s easy. Any receipt that contains a labor charge will automatically have a Care Buck printed on the back. Cut it out and keep it for future repairs.

How do I use Care Bucks?
Simple. You can use Care Bucks just like cash when paying for a future repair. Care Bucks can be combined with other Care Bucks and promotions – just like cash. Care Bucks can only be applied to labor charges and must be used in full – no leftovers.

Are Care Bucks Transferrable?
Yes! In fact, we highly encourage it. Care Bucks can be given to friends, family, or a complete stranger.

Do Care Bucks expire?
Yes. Each Care Buck has a unique ID and expiration date (3 months from receipt date) that is tracked in our system.

Care Bucks are just another way we are saying thank you. We appreciate all of our customers and it is time for us to give back – the answer is Care Bucks.

Any questions just let us know by emailing help@universitypccare.com or calling us at 252-558-1280.

There is a Mac Trojan that is spreading via a known security vulnerability in Java within Mac OS X. Apple has patched the vulnerability but that does not mean you may not be infected.

This particular variant is Trojan-Downloader:OSX/Flashback.I according to F-Secure.

According to F-Secure – Trojan-Downloader:OSX/Flashback.I connects to a remote site to download its payload; on successful infection, the malware modifies targeted webpages displayed in the web browser.

In other words, it is a browser high-jacker.

Macs are commonly known to not have major issues with virus and malware infections due to several factors which I will not get into right now – but regardless of what you think about Macs this is a serious issue as there have been many reports of this infection in the wild.

Unlike many other malware threats in the past this does not require the user to enter a password.

How can I check to see if I am infected?
Thanks to John Welch, @bynki on Twitter, we have a quick little AppleScript that will check the two possibly infected files to see if you are infected. If you want to take a peek at the code in the script, feel free to do so.

Note: We have edited the original script to be a little more friendly.

Download FindFlashback

If infection is found
If the script detects an infection you can follow the instructions from F-Secure, but if you are not comfortable using Terminal commands, please do not try and give us a call.

If no infection is found
Run Software Update. Seriously, do NOT skip this step.

If you have any questions give us a call and we would be glad to help.

The next time you stop in our store you may notice something different. It is not the new Care Counter, although that is awesome within itself, it is the use of iPads by all our staff.

One of our core values is to make the repair process with us simple, personal and enriching to each customer. It is about the total experience, not just us fixing your issue and getting you out the door. We want to make sure you understand the issue and provide some helpful tips to possibly avoid the issue in the future.

So why are the iPads important?

During check in we use the iPad to come to you, instead of you walking to a counter and someone entering in your data into “the system”. Once we enter in the information and walk you through the steps we are going to take, you can review your info and sign the agreement directly on the iPad screen.

Since each technician has an iPad, documentation is literally at each technicians finger tips. If you call, email, stop by or look up your repair staus online – we have the answer right there in our hands.

We are here to help. This is just one more tool to make that experience better.

So next time you stop by ask us about our iPads and if you are interested in using iPads in your business, let us know. We can help with setup and training.

If you are interested in buying an iPad (or two) we highly suggest contacting Appogee at 1-877-277-6433 as they are a local Apple Reseller.

We always strive to be open and honest about every aspect of our repair process, from explaining our process at every check in to answering any question along the way.

Our first step in this process was allowing our customers to check the repair status online. Not only are customers able to view the current status but actually see each action as it is being documenting in our system. This feature has been a huge hit and today we are pushing the envelope even further.

We are now showing a live updating number of our average repair time. This is a live average of our repair turn-around time directly from our repair tracking system. This number includes weekends, holidays and time waiting for ordered parts.

You can view this at the bottom of every page. We are working to move it to a more prominent position on our site but have yet to determine a good placement. Any suggestions or questions let us know.
